Researchers create new compound to build space-age antennas

Science Daily  February 29, 2024 Additive manufacturing with high-performance polymers can realize lightweight and complex geometries that can also be manufactured on board. However, polymers are electromagnetically inefficient for applications requiring electrical conductivity, such as guiding microwave signals. An international team of researchers (Canada, USA – Drexel University) developed MXene coated high-efficiency, lightweight additively manufactured microwave components with waveguiding functionality from 8 to 33 GHz, covering low earth orbit (LEO) frequencies, with a power-handling capability up to 10 dB and a transmission coefficient of 93 %. After a single dip-coating cycle, the polymer waveguide performed only 2 % below an […]

Researchers develop silicon cuboid nanoantenna

Phys.org  March 21, 2022 The Purcell effect is commonly used to increase the spontaneous emission rate by modifying the local environment of a light emitter. Researchers in China studied the scattering cross section, polarization charge distribution, and electromagnetic field distribution for electromagnetic plane wave illuminating the silicon dielectric cuboid nanoantenna and identified simultaneous existence of electric dipole (ED), magnetic dipole (MD) and electric quadrupole (EQ) emission resonance modes in this nanoantenna. When they calculated the Purcell factor of ED, MD, and EQ emitters with different moment orientations as a function of radiation wavelength by placing these point radiation source within […]

Metasurface-based antenna turns ambient radio waves into electric power

Phys.org  February 28, 2022 Researchers at the South Florida University have demonstrated a high-efficiency RF energy harvesting device based on a metamaterial perfect absorber (MPA). With the embedded Schottky diodes, the MPA-based rectenna converts captured RF waves to DC power. The Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity resonance of the MPA greatly improved the amount of energy captured. The FP resonance exhibited a high Q-factor and significantly increased the voltage across the Schottky diodes, which improved the rectification efficiency, particularly at low intensity. This led to a factor of 16 improvement of RF-DC conversion efficiency at ambient intensity level. According to the researchers […]
