Introducing Scimetry Reports…

We’ve completed the development of our prototype!  We’re now rolling this into a service before we develop it into a product.

The Scimetry Report is a new type of report for the science professional that is generated using semi-automated, quantitative methods for visualizing knowledge and measuring global progress in the research and development of scientific fields.

All reports include the following scientific metrics:

  • A collaboration map of institutional powerhouses
  • A ranking of high performance talent
  • An analysis of major research fronts
  • A trend analysis of specific research progress

Measuring Innovation Activity: A 3-D representation of collaboration (lines) between institutions (spheres) shows productive partnerships. Important centers of excellence, and their associated researchers, can be ranked according using advanced algorithms.

Background

The activity of the science, technology and innovation community is accelerating at a frightening pace.  In the United States alone, more than 13,000 journal articles are published in peer-reviewed journals and more than 5,000 patents are granted by the US Patent Office each week.  Just keeping up with the progress in innovation, much less surveying new fields of study, now requires the use of automated methods.  More importantly, automated methods offer the opportunity to measure specific metrics of progress in the scientific community.  These “scientific metrics” are the focus of Scimetry reports. Sciligent develops these reports to offer a fast, affordable and convenient method of obtaining this “scientific intelligence.”

Government S&T Applications

Use Scimetry reports to save valuable research and literature surveying time in order to:

  • get up to speed quickly on a new topic area
  • accelerate the development time of new programs
  • assess the quality of performers from in your portfolio in a way that directly reflects their relative performance in their field of research
Private Sector Applications

Arm yourself with the high quality, quantitative knowledge of scientific fields of study for enhanced efficiency or to gain a competitive edge. Our reports can be used to:

  • support decisions for external capital investment
  • explore new internal research and development initiatives
  • survey and identify potential partners in proposal bids

Frequently Asked Questions

How does it work?  What’s the catch?

We query scientific literature databases with specific keywords to extract meta-data that we then use to develop a subject-specific database.  We then apply a combination of state-of-the-art and novel algorithms to this database to parse, analyze and format this data into digital reports in a variety of formats.  Because the entire process is largely automated, minimal guidance from our analysts is required.  This highly efficient process, combined with the potential to resell the report to multiple customers, and modern digital distribution are what allow us to deliver high-quality, low-cost reports at your convenience.

How is this product different from other scientometric products available today?

Scientometric tools offered today require large commitments of time or money in order to produce high quality results and valuable insight.  Popular database subscription services are costly and their included analytical toolset requires proper knowledge and training to use well.  Open-source tools, while free, require programming skill in order to produce reliable and consistent results. Additionally, developing a good scientometric report is still very much an art, requiring clever construction of Boolean search terms and skilled interpretation in analyzing the results.  We take the sweat and guess work out of using these scientometric tools and create a low-barrier entry point for professionals to leverage these resource by providing customized reports.  Our expertise in navigating knowledge networks and data visualization allow us to create a comprehensive and balanced assessment of scientific fields.  Additionally, because our analysts have many years of experience in S&T, they are trained to produce reports that reflect the changing trends in the science and technology landscape.
